City Greenville
The area that is now Greenville was originally inhabited by the Caddo Native American tribe. In the early 1800s, Anglo settlers began moving into the area, and by the mid-1800s, a small community had developed.
Greenville was founded in 1846 when Texas Senator Thomas Jefferson Stribling purchased 640 acres of land in the area and established a townsite. The town was named in honor of Thomas J. Green, a general in the Texas Revolution.
