Located within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area, Rockwall TX was an important stop on the National Road of the Republic. In the mid-1840s, the area was home to a number of cotton farms. By the end of the Civil War, this area was largely undeveloped, but it had substantial amounts of wheat and corn. The region struggled to transport its products, and it was only in 1873 that the Texas and Pacific Railway was constructed through Kaufman County. The railroad’s arrival in Rockwall was a boon for the area, as it made transportation easier.
Besides museums, there are several other historical sites in Rockwall. The Manson-La Moreaux-Hartman House is one of the city’s many historic buildings. The Rockwall County Historical Foundation helps preserve local history. It maintains a digital photo archive and an oral history project. It also produces history-focused educational materials. The foundation has created a historic downtown walking tour that features 22 historical buildings.
The town of Rockwall was first occupied by the Creek and Caddo Indians. In the early nineteenth century, the first Anglo-American settlers moved into the area and began digging wells. During this time, the early settlers found a rock wall underground that led them to name the town after it. These settlers thought the rock walls were man-made, but later study revealed that they were actually natural sandstone dikes that pushed through Cretaceous marl. Rockwall became the county seat in 1873 and incorporated in 1874. View this article.
